ASTANA, Kazakhstan, Oct. 27 (UPI) -- A space capsule carrying a Russian, a Spaniard and an American returned to Earth Monday night from the International Space Station, CBC News reported.
The three-and-a-half-hour trip ended when the spacecraft touched down on the wide-open steppes of Kazakhstan. It's only the second time a U.S. astronaut has come home in a Russian craft and landed in a foreign country.
American Edward Lu, Russian Yuri Malenchenko spent six months in orbit. Spaniard Pedro Duque was at the ISS for a week conducting scientific experiments.
Since the disintegration of the space shuttle Columbia in February put NASA's manned space flights on hold, the Russian Soyuz capsules have been the linchpin of the space station program.
