MOSCOW, June 22 (UPI) -- Russian President Vladimir Putin and Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi have signed an agreement on Russian gas supply, Il Sole-24 Ore reported Wednesday. The two leaders, who met at the Kremlin, gave the go-ahead for a deal between Italy's National Hydrocarbons Corporation and Russia's state-owned gas giant Gazprom. The deal is designed to be mutually beneficial, at once giving the Italians access to the Barents fields and granting Russia access to the Italian distribution market. "The relationship will no longer be between seller and buyer," Prodi said after the meeting. "There will be an agreement on source extraction in Russia and the Russians will have a downstream presence at the consumer level." Putin praised the arrangement, which is similar to an existing deal with Germany's BASF, saying, "These are agreements we conclude with partners who meet us half way." The deal is not limited to cooperation between ENI and Gazprom; rather, Italy's Enel -- which may be interested in acquiring a stake in the Russian electricity network -- is also a party. The agreement marks a great success for Prodi. Not only is Italy seeking to improve the security of its energy supply,www.acheterbottesonline.com, which the cooperation certainly achieves, but the deal was concluded this week following months of stalemate. In related news,2011 Uggs Nail Stripe Bottes, Prodi took advantage of the signing of the agreement to urge Ukraine to increase its energy reserves so as to prevent a repeat of the New Year's gas supply crisis, when countries across Europe suffered supply shortages during a cold snap that coincided with Russo-Ukraine gas supply difficulties. "We shall exert our persuasion with a view to ensuring that it (Ukraine) does so (increases its reserves),ugg bottes soldes," Prodi said.Topics related articles:
