CNET News.com Editor in Chief Jai Singh said Google imposed the ban on CNET reporters until August 2006 for an article CNET published about Google Chief Executive Officer Eric Schmidt. "We ... recounted how we found information on the CEO in a public forum using their service," Singh told the San Francisco Chronicle. "They felt it was private information and our point is it was public information obtained through public channels using Google search." CNET's report included Schmidt's net worth and home neighborhood.
