The CFMEU and BHP have been involved in a dispute for more than 12 months.
"We sort of threw around a few ideas and we do recommence negotiations on January 9.

"We're about making sure there's choice in opportunity.
"We're focused on where we want to be and obviously BHP needs some time to themselves."
CFMEU spokesman Steve Smyth says there are still a number of sticking points.
"Also the main thing is making sure that people that live in those communities get an option - they get to do rosters that suit them in the residential areas.
"Our concern is that BHP wants to impose an agreement that opens it up to those people that commute," he said.

The Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU) says it will not approve an enterprise agreement (EBA) for BHP's Bowen Basin workforce in central Queensland unless rosters and commuting arrangements are addressed.

"They need some time to go back and talk to their sites and obviously we've got a direction from our members on where they want to go with it.
