TEHRAN, Aug. 7 (UPI) -- Iran on Saturday criticized the attack on the southern Iraqi city of Najaf
, holy to Shiites, saying the United States bore all responsibility for it.
The Islamic Republic News Agency
, IRNA
, quoted President Mohammad Khatami as saying that Iran "strongly rejects attacks on the holy places
, such as Najaf
, regardless of the pretexts."
Khatami said he did not think the "occupiers could settle their problems by resorting to such methods
, for they are attacking the Iraqi people day after day."
IRNA also quoted supreme spiritual leader Ali Khamenei as saying that "America has reached a dead-end in Iraq and is behaving like a wolf that fell in a trap by trying to scare others through creating noise and flexing muscles."
Khamanei said the "killing of the Iraqi people shows that the dark and arrogant forces don't care about people's beliefs
, their rights or the independence of nations."
Earlier in the day
, Iraqi Prime Minister Eyad Allawi vowed to "purify Najaf from the armed gangs," adding that the Iraqi police was succeeding in taking control of the city.
Allawi said that 1,200 elements
, most of them non-Iraqis, had gone to Najaf to fight the Iraqi police there.
The U.S. forces have been providing air and ground support for the Iraqi police operations in Najaf.
