Where Are The Gators In Your Pond

On beautiful day playing golf at a friend's country club I noticed floating gator heads in a pond. I joking asked him heavy duty down coats, "What was the purpose of those?" Was it for something to aim at for people that hit the ball in the water hazards? He explained to me the problems the course was having with Canada geese living in the ponds and being destructive to the golf course. It seems the floating gator heads gave enough movement and realistic appearance to send the geese elsewhere. The geese never complained - they just left.
Have any "Gators" in your workplace that do this exact thing with your good employees and customers?

1. The Gator Manager

The Gator manager is the unknown danger to your organization. He is the person that has significant turnover or morale problems and the executives can't understand why. Take a few minutes to watch your pond. Are employees going out of their way to avoid their manager? Do employees clam up with suggestions because they are afraid of being gator bait and chewed on? Gator managers are on constant patrol looking for issues to chomp on. Often they are not interested in solving problems because they are more interested in getting the problems "out of the pond."
The Gator manager's perfect day is a day without distraction, interruption and problems. In other words, a day they don't have to deal with people invading their space. Gator managers will not only run off the bad employees that are afraid of his bite, but also will send the good employees packing their bags in search of a more clam environment to perform their work.
If you suspect one of your managers is a Gator look for a better location to put your carnivore and unfortunately that may mean removing them from your pond. Gator managers, like their reptilian counterparts, will not easily change their thinking on their role in life. Can you imagine trying to train an alligator to live on seaweed and other more gentle non-animal prey in their environment? No likely and the same goes for your Gator in the office. Their mindset is rule their territory and rule sternly. People skills and coaching is not a style they will be comfortable with and will never be a warm friendly type of leader.

2. The Gator employee

Like the Gator manager, the Gator employee can also run good employees out of your pond, but they can also do worse damage by running away your customers. What type of contact experience do your customers have with your employees? Is your loan office understanding and encouraging or negative and questioning? Is your help line truly help or do they snap at people?
I was scheduled to fly to Tampa just prior to a forecasted hurricane. From all reports, Tampa was going to take a good shot and I saw no need to place myself in unneeded danger. My assistant called the airline to see what we could do to cancel my reservations because I knew flights were going to be suspended anyhow. She encountered a Gator. She told the agent on the phone the event I was going to Tampa for had been cancelled with the impending weather situation so no need to make the trip into trouble. The response she got was a Gator's bite, "Sorry, Tampa isn't one of the 8 cities on the cancel list so there is nothing I can do. If you don't take the trip you will just lose the cost of the ticket." That was the end of that. No care for the customer, no care for the airline's reputation, and no interest in anything other than getting me out of her pond.
So we tried to take another dip in a different part of that airline's pond and called back to get another person. This person's response was a bit different. "I see here you are reserved for a flight to Tampa in the morning. Although Tampa isn't yet on the cancelled cities list, I see where your ticket hasn't been issued yet because they are probably waiting on I.D. verification at the airport. Would you like me to just cancel the reservation?" I was very happy, one less person for the airline to have to eventually reroute and with this response. I'll be happy to swim in your pond again.
How many customers are you losing because of your Gators? How many Gator employees are you creating because you have Gator managers? In the world of eat or be eaten, everyone becomes carnivorous. Make sure your Gators aren't eating the goose that lays your golden eggs.
