by Yan Feng WASHINGTON, Oct. 10 (Xinhua) -- The three-day World Media Summit provides a good opportunity for the world's media organizations to exchange views and work out guidelines to deal with new challenges but the follow-up implementation will be essential to ensure its true success
, a manager of a U.S. news network said on Saturday. "Xinhua and its co-sponsors are to be congratulated for their foresight and diligence in organizing the World Media Summit. It was a good opportunity for the world's media organizations to exchange views and develop principles that may guide the media sector during a period of financial stress and upheaval caused by disruptive technologies," Jack C. Fensterstock, Managing Partner, China of Tantao News Network, CNEWSCO, LLC, told Xinhua in an exclusive interview. "For some organizations, their very survival is at stake unless they can quickly adapt and form strategic partnerships," Fensterstock said. The summit highlighted these and other principles such as "accurate
, objective, impartial and fair coverage of the world's news events and the need to promote transparency and accountability," he added. "As with similar summits that end on a high note, follow-up and implementation of the adopted guiding principles will eventually determine if this summit is a true success
," Fensterstock said. He urged the leaders of the world's major media organizations who attended the summit to shoulder their responsibility to effect change and implement the adopted guiding principles. "They are the ones who need to change the prevalent attitudes that may now exist within their organizations, transform their entities into New Media powerhouses," he said. Fensterstock stressed that business as usual can have no place in the media industry of the future in the portrayal of world events or the depiction of other media organizations because economics and disruptive technologies are and will continue to shake up the old order. "New leaders will emerge and Xinhua is positioning itself to become a top tier player. This will be the result of carefully considered strategies guided by strong and focused leaders that leverage existing resource bases, focus and enhance market advantages, quickly adopt New Media, and develop nontraditional business relationships
," he said. "These factors are at the crux of a media organization's very survival," said the manager of the news network. The World Media Summit, launched by Xinhua and eight other major media organizations, was held in Beijing on Oct. 8-10 and attended by about 300 representatives from more than 170 media outlets across the world. Chinese President Hu Jintao delivered a keynote speech at the summit on Friday, calling on world media organizations to promote "true
, correct, comprehensive and objective communication of information." With the media's growing influence
, "it is more important than ever before that the media should establish and uphold social responsibilities," he said.
