INDIANAPOLIS, May 17 (UPI) -- Valparaiso University Wednesday accepted an invitation to join the Horizon League in the 2007-08 academic year.
With its acceptance, Valpo, as the school is commonly called
, will become the league's 10th member in basketball joining Butler
, Cleveland State, Detroit, Illinois-Chicago, Wisconsin-Green Bay, Wisconsin-Milwaukee
, Wright State, Loyola and Youngstown State.
The Crusaders will play in 17 intercollegiate sports
, not including men's and women's golf.
In football
, Valparaiso competes in Division 1-AA. In the Pioneer League last fall, the Crusaders were 3-8 and 1-3 in the league.
It will be the first addition for the Horizon League since Youngstown State joined for the 2001-02 academic year.
"Sixty-one percent of all Valparaiso alumni reside in the five states encompassed by the Horizon League
," said Valparaiso President Alan F. Harre at a news conference. "In addition many of the alumni in these states are in metropolitan areas not served by our current conference affiliation."
