DETROIT , Aug. 4 (UPI) -- The head of Toyota Motor Sales USA has outlined an ambitious plan to roll out 16 new models over 30 months , including two new gasoline-electric hybrids. Buoyed by sales of its hybrid Prius sedan and Highlander and Lexus SUV hybrids , Toyota expects to sell around 600 ,000 hybrid vehicles in the United States by 2010, Jim Press , president of Toyota Motor Sales USA told journalists at an auto industry conference in Traverse City , Mich. In addition to as many as 10 more hybrids , Toyota plans to expand the offerings of its youth-oriented Scion brand. New vehicles include the Toyota FJ Cruiser, a small sport-utility vehicle , and a new sub-compact to replace the diminutive Echo compact , the Detroit News reported Thursday. Toyota recorded the best sales in its 48-year history in July. Buyers who want a $21,000 Toyota Prius face months-long waits because of heavy demand for the popular gas-sipping hybrid.
