Passive component and active component are two commonly heard items in electronic systems. But what's exactly the differences between them or what passive components and active components about? Now let's discuss about this topic here.
Generally, a passive component, depending on field, may be either a component that consumes energy, or a component that is incapable of power gain. Passivity is a property of engineering systems and most commonly found in analog electronics and control systems. Active is the antonym of passive, active components can lead to the increase of power in the electronic systems. To be specifically, passive components and active components are basic electronic elements, the main difference between active and passive components is that the active ones have the ability to amplify signal, whereas passive components do not amplify signal automatically.
Active components
Active components require a control signal and a minimum voltage to perform, like controlling the flow of current. Active components can change their electrical behavior, according to the changes in their input signal. They are used in dynamic applications like amplification switching, rectification and modulation as well as in almost all business sectors, which use computers, power supplies, defense electronics, telecommunication devices, automotive electronics and business machines.
Buyers should understand the difference between active and passive components before purchasing. Usually, the active components are more sensitive and prone to damages. Hence they require immense care while packaging and handling.
Passive components
As a typical electronic component, resistors, transformers, passive transducers and capacitors are examples of passive components which is commonly used in electronic engineering and control systems for basis applications such as storing electrical charge, limiting current and suppressing current surges. A passive component does not change their electrical behavior with the application of the signal.
Fiber Optic Passive Components are widely used in fiber optic network industry. Fiber optic passive component is essentially different from the electronic passive component. As one of the basic type of fiber optic components, fiber optic passive components includes MUX/Demux( CWDM MUX/Demux, DWDM Mux/Demux), CWDM OADM, DWDM OADM, Fiber Optic Attenuator, Fiber Optic Patch Cord, Fiber Optic Pigtail, Fiber Optic Connector, Fiber Optic Adaptor, etc. The passive components are fiber optic components with the process complying with the basic laws of optic, the theory of ray of light and electromagnetic wave, the technical indicators, a variety of computational formulas and a number of testing methods, which is closely related to the fiber optics and integrated optics. Therefore, In the fiber optic cable, it serves as a link, distribution, isolation, filtering and so on. Passive fiber optic components mans they work without external power, while active fiber optic components need external power to work.
