TaylorMade R7 Superquad Driver
The TaylorMade r7 SuperQuad driver combines the power and forgiveness of a 460 cc club head – the maximum size allowed by the USGA / R&A – with the ability to promote changes to the launch angle, spin-rate and trajectory. For players who demand the freedom to choose specific sets of launch conditions in their pursuit of greater distance, the r7 SuperQuad is the longest driver with Movable Weight Technology (MWT) that we've ever created. The contemporarily shaped club head is finished entirely in a deep, rich black, including the clubface. Yellow accents on the sole, similar to those on the r7 425 and r7 460, offer a dramatic contrast.
The TaylorMade r7 SuperQuad is engineered for players who prefer to assess and calculate before launching the ball, who enjoy tweaking their equipment in attempts to optimise their equipment and make the absolute most out of their physical abilities. The r7 SuperQuad has four MWT cartridge ports that free up 26 grams of movable weight (two 12-gram cartridges and two 1-gram cartridges) in a 460 cc head. To do this TaylorMade developed ways to expand the application of the r Ultra-Thin Wall technology throughout the club head, including the hosel. In a world of 460 cc drivers, this is the only one with four weight ports and this much movable weight (26 grams). The TaylorMade r7 SuperQuad's MWT gives players the ability to choose from six CG locations in one driver. They can raise or lower their launch angle by 1.5°, making a 9.5° driver behave like an 8° or 11°. It promotes a lateral change in ball flight of up to 28 yards -- 14 in either direction. That's the width of an average fairway.
At 460 cc, the r7 SuperQuad's MOI is inherently high. Plus, it receives an MOI boost from the weight of the four ports and cartridges concentrated in the heel and toe areas. Remember, the benefit of high MOI is that it keeps ball speed and distance high on miss-hits. TaylorMade's patented Inverted Cone Technology does the same thing that high MOI does: preserves ball speed and distance on miss-hits. When you combine the effect of the club head’s high MOI with the positive affect of ICT, the result is an extraordinarily high "effective MOI," which permits the TaylorMade r7 SuperQuad to deliver the same type of high ball speed and distance on miss-hits equal to a driver that measures higher than 5800 MOI with a constant-thickness clubface, if not even better.
The R7 SuperQuad driver is TaylorMade's moveable weight driver with 4 weight plugs at 460cc. Previously they only had 4 weights at 420cc or the R5 Dual TP with 2 weights at 460cc, so this is the maximum they can do and it certainly slots very well into their range. We liked the all black head finish which gave it sinister look, although some may not like the face and crown being the same colour for alignment. Performance wise it was very good and moving the weights around did affect the trajectory. The TaylorMade SuperQuad has a bigger difference between the weights (12 and 1 gram) so the trajectory changes are more obvious than with the R7 Quad. The shaft in the standard SuperQuad model is OK, but if you have the cash then go for the TP version, which also has a more square alignment then this slightly closed version. As well as questioning its value for money, we have to mark it down for the noise at impact. It seems to be a trend now, but the crash sound at impact doesn't do it for us, especially when other TaylorMade drivers give a much better sound and feel.
» All-Black 460 cc clubhead
» 26 grams of movable weight in four ports that promote 28-yard lateral trajectory change and 1.5ºlaunch-angle change. (Includes two 12g and two 1g weights)
» Massive 460 cc clubhead combined with TaylorMade's Inverted Cone Technology produces an extremely-high eMOI* that exceeds 5800 (USGA conforming)
» Exceptionally low-deep CG and massive clubface area makes this driver exceptionally easy to launch on a high, strong trajectory for long carry and phenomenal distance
» TaylorMade RE*AX 65 shaft by Fujikura reduces ovaling in the mid-section and promotes stability, consistency and increased clubhead speed
