Total PC shipments accounted for 28.7 per cent of the smart connected device market in 2012 while tablets accounted for 11.8 per cent and smartphones for 59.5 per cent. By 2017, total PCs are expected to drop to 13 per cent, while tablets and smartphones will contribute 16.5 per cent and 70.5 per cent, respectively to the overall market.
Since Apple launched the iPad in 2010, PC industry heavyweights like Hewlett-Packard, Microsoft and Intel have struggled to adapt their products to consumers' growing preferences for mobile devices.
With the launch of low-cost devices running on Android platform by local firms, sales of android tablet and smartphones have grown rapidly in the last two years.
