The Croatian government's amendments, which the parliamentary majority adopted, reduced the budget deficit by 2.3 billion kuna (some 426 million U.S. dollars) and the deficit will be 0.88 percent of GDP, instead of the initially planned 1.6 percent. Budget expenditures amount to about 127 billion kuna (23.52 billion dollars) and are a little over four percent higher than those in this year's budget, while revenues of 124.6 billion kuna (23.08 billion dollars) are 5.3 percent higher than this year. The Croatian parliament also adopted a law on the execution of the budget stipulating that the state can borrow 14.7 billion kuna(2.72 billion dollars) at home and abroad to cover the deficit and refinance existing liabilities. Last week the World Bank urged Croatia to reduce the budget deficit in 2009 as much as possible given its high foreign debt and the large refinancing needs of public and private sectors.
