OTTAWA
, April 8 (Xinhua) -- Support for Canada's opposition Liberal Party has grown to surpass that for the ruling Conservatives
, according to a new poll released Wednesday. The Strategic Counsel poll conducted for Canadian Television and "the Globe and Mail" put the Liberals at 34 percent versus 32 percent for the Conservatives. This means the support rate for the Liberals has increased 8 percentage points from the last election in October 2008 while that for the Conservatives has dropped 6 percentage points. "Those are very clear lines and for the Conservatives that's not a positive trend especially given we're in an (economic) environment now that isn't exactly overflowing with good news
," Pollster Peter Donolo said. "Economic downturns make very uncomfortable backdrops for the party in office. It's natural that (the Conservatives) should be getting a bumpy ride
," he added. In the province of Quebec
, the Conservatives are also outnumbered by the Liberals at 15 percent versus 29 percent. The poll put the New Democratic Party (NDP) at 15 percent and the Bloc Quebecois at 10 percent at the national level. A thousand people were asked what party they would vote for if a federal election were "held tomorrow
," during the survey conducted on April 2-5. The margin of error is at 3.1 percent.Related Topics Articles:
