Should Youngins Be Totally Banned From Hitting The Tanning Bed?
You have to be 18 to buy a pack of butts
, but in some parts of the country
, any tweenager can still pop into a tanning bed and cook her skin silly. Both activities are known to increase the risk of cancer--so should the government slap an age requirement on fake-baking?
'Tis the question currently being pondered by lawmakers in the sunshiney states of Texas and Florida. Yep, right on the heels of New Jersey's possible Brazilian-wax ban
, these states are considering laws that would make it illegal for under-18ers to tan without doctor's notes and a parental chaperone present ... in Florida, under-16ers would be banned from tanning entirely. Granted, many states already have similar laws in place. But I'd venture to guess these two states probably have some of the highest per-capita numbers of high-maintenance women--with the exceptions of California and, yes, New Jersey--so you know some peeps there are pissed.
Personally
, I wonder why there isn't already a nationwide restriction on the age of tanners. Way back in 2005
, the World Health Organization recommended that nobody anywhere under 18 be allowed to hit the beds.
What do you think--should lawmakers have bigger fish to fry than tanorexia? Or is this a totally logical and overdue move? Did you tan under the age of 18? Does your state have age requirements for tanning?
