WOBURN
, Mass., June 19 (UPI) -- A Massachusetts man was ordered held without bail Friday in the slayings of his wife, two children and mother-in-law.
A Middlesex District Court judge in Woburn, Mass., entered an automatic not guilty plea for Thomas Mortimer IV
, 43, of Winchester, and authorized a defense request for a forensic mental health evaluation
, the cable news network NECN reported.
Mortimer is charged with four counts of first-degree murder in the slayings of his 41-year-old wife, Laura
, 4-year-old son Thomas
, 2-year-old daughter Charlotte and 64-year-old mother-in-law Ragna Ellen Stone
, who were found dead in their home Wednesday.
The Boston Globe reported Mortimer, a sales executive
, was taken into custody in a small town just south of the Vermont state line Thursday. Police said he left letters confessing to killing his family
, and describing marital and financial problems.
Middlesex District Attorney Gerard T. Leone Jr. said the victims died of "blunt force trauma and sharp objects" but the weapons were not specified. There were signs Mortimer had tried to kill himself
