VATICAN CITY, May 19 (UPI) -- Pope John Paul II allegedly performed at least two apparently successful exorcisms in his lifetime, the Italian news agency ANSA reported.
In one, the pope approached a woman, identified only as Francesca F.
, who "was rolling on the floor screaming" and was said to be possessed by the Devil. When the pope blessed her and told her he would say Mass for her soul, the woman immediately calmed down, ANSA said.
An exorcism, usually performed by a specially qualified priest
, is intended to combat and remove diabolic possession.
A Catholic prelate was a witness to another papal exorcism in St. Peter's Square in the Vatican. The subject was a struggling 16-year-old girl being restrained by four people.
When the pope left his "popemobile" and approached her
, the girl began screaming obscenities at him, ANSA quotes the prelate as saying. The pope made the sign of the Cross over the girl and prayed until her behavior stopped.
