LONDON
UGG Bailey Button, Feb. 17 (UPI) -- Fear of avian influenza in Europe has flooded Britain with cheap chicken.
Sales of chicken are down 70 percent in Italy and 20 percent in Germany and France, the Times of London reports. The chicken that is not being sold on the continent appears to be ending up in the hands of British wholesalers.
The influx is bad news for British farmers. The Times said that their break-even point is 54.5 pence (95 cents) per pound but many are already selling for 49.5 pence and some chicken nearing the end of its marketable life is going for as little as 37 or 38 pence.
The deadly H5N1 strain of avian influenza has been found in wild birds in Europe
Ugg stiefel, including Germany, Austria and Italy. So far, the virus has not appeared in domestic fowl.
But in Italy one-sixth of the workforce in the poultry industry has been laid off this week.
"We are close to collapse
Ugg billig," said Paolo Bruni, head of the Italian Agricultural Council.Topics related articles:
