Expert predicts recovery for Apple's Jobs
CUPERTINO, Calif., June 21 (UPI) -- Prospects for recovery are good for Apple Inc. co-founder and Chief Executive Steve Jobs after his reported liver transplant , a medical expert says.
Dr. Waldo Concepcion, a Stanford University transplant expert , told Sunday's San Jose (Calif.) Mercury-News that transplants used to treat the kind of slow-moving pancreatic cancer Jobs has are an effective strategy to treat the disease.
"These tumors can be treated quite well with liver transplants and are able to be managed and have a good outcome ," Concepcion, who did not treat Jobs and is not familiar with the specifics of his case , told the newspaper. "In transplants, there are no guarantees , but if it works well , people can lead normal lives. We're proud of him and we're all rooting for him , and wish him the best."
Jobs , 54 , disclosed in 2004 that he had been diagnosed with a rare form of pancreatic tumor called islet neuroendocrine cancer. He went on an unspecified leave of absence in January.
The Wall Street Journal reported Saturday that Jobs underwent a liver transplant two months ago in Tennessee. The Mercury-News said Jobs is set to return to work part-time at the end of June.
