Death toll reaches 27 in Greek Peloponnese wildfires
ATHENS, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) -- A multi-front spate of wildfires, extending from the central Peloponnese down to Laconia prefecture in the extreme south, have killed at least 27 people, Greek news agency ANA-MPA reported Friday. This is a shocking development amid an already fire-marred 2007summer season in the heat-struck east Mediterranean country. According to the Greek fire department, a total of 21 bodies were found in villages near the town of Zaharo in the western Peloponnese, including three firefighters. To the southeast, another six were found in another fire near the town of Areohoro. News reports said that another 10 victims were found in the western Peloponnese, but authorities have not confirmed the figure yet. Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis arrived in Zaharo Friday night, while main opposition PASOK party leader George Papandreou, who cut short a rally in northern Greece, was also heading to the affected regions and also spoke by phone with local mayors.
