Lopez, a rifleman, enlisted in March 2009. Catherwood, also a rifleman, enlisted in June 2009. Each was on his first overseas deployment.
Lopez is the second serviceman killed in Afghanistan this month from Rosamond, a town of 15,000 in Kern County. Army Sgt. Brian J. Pedro, 27, was reported killed Oct. 2 northwest of Kabul.
