Experts warn that pests are threatening the capital's ecosystem as infestations have been reported in Beijing for more than a week,abercrombie, although government officials say it's all under control.
"Caterpillars have not only taken complete possession of the trees, they are even all over the ceiling and on the walls," a resident surnamed Liu from Fengtai district, told Beijing Times on Monday.
In the past week,doudouen moncler, districts including Dongcheng,louboutin pas cher, Chaoyang and Shijingshan have seen an infestation of American white moth caterpillars.
Beijing has 56 kinds of non-native species and the city's fragile ecosystem and frequent international communication make it vulnerable to biotic intrusion, according to Xie Yan,abercrombie and fitch, director of the China Unit of Wildlife Conservation Society.
"At least half of the species were introduced on purpose,abercrombie france, which is extremely dangerous without effective regulations," she told METRO.
She said a blacklist of all the dangerous alien species exists.
"But there are so many species whose characteristics we don't really know that are not included on the list," she said.
She suggested that the government come up with a "gray list" and apply risk assessment to all the unfamiliar species.
"The American white moth has become one of the top pests," said professor Yang Ding of the Department of Entomology at Renmin University of China.
It has become one of the most serious threats to plants in the capital, according to Yang.
Yang said the moth is destructive because its caterpillars feed on more than 300 kinds of plants and like farmed trees most,moncler, which means that the majority of trees in the capital are in danger.
"The American white moth has an exceptionally strong breeding ability," said Zhang Zhongning, a researcher specializing in the American white moth from the Institute of Zoology at the Chinese Academy of Science. "A female can lay 30 million to 200 million eggs every year."
But officials say there is no need to worry.
"The larvae carry no virus and are harmless to humans. There are no technical problems dealing with them,louboutin," said Tao Wanqiang,franklin marshall, head of the Beijing Municipal Forestry Protection Station speaking to Beijing Times on Monday.
But experts, such as Xie,moncler pas cher, are less optimistic.
"They've been trying many ways to control the moth, including using ultraviolet light,ralph lauren, insecticides and the introduction of its natural enemies; but none has proved effective, as the invaded areas are still expanding," she said.
