The 8th Guangdong Modern Dance Festival will take place in Guangzhou on July 24-29, 2011.

The Guangdong Modern Dance Festival, since its inauguration in 2004, has been widely recognized as the most important international platform for Chinese contemporary dance development. In the past 7 years, several thousand young Chinese dance makers have premiered almost 300 original works in the Festival, featuring artists from over 20 provinces and regions in China. For a festival that operates on box office income and donation from the community without government subsidy, the development has been overwhelming. It’s time for the Festival to take a break after this year to find a more sustainable model of operation for the challenges ahead.
Celebrating New Dance from China in the Last Decade
As the last festival before the break, the Festival will review Chinese dance development in the last decade and change the focus of this year’s programs from the international dance scene to China itself. The coming Festival will gather from all over China (including Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan) about 80 dance groups featuring over 300 Chinese artists in its “Youth Dance Marathon (YDM)”, “Springboard” and “Mainstage” performances. Together with more than a dozen visiting companies from overseas, the Festival will present over 100 creations in its week-long program. We have also invited over 30 international festival directors, curators and guests to witness the maturity of modern dance in China.
