NEW YORK , Oct. 7 (UPI) -- Police in New York allege a mental patient went on a rampage this weekend , repeatedly stabbing a woman out walking her dog. Witnesses said a man armed with a knife attacked 67-year-old Susan Barron for no apparent reason , the New York Daily News reported. "He was chopping down on her ," witness Andrew Fink said of Saturday's brutal attack. "I saw him hit her at least 10 times. She was screaming and crawling along the street and people were running away." An off-duty police officer finally put an end to the attack , shooting the suspect , identified as Lee Coleman , once in the stomach. The 38-year-old suspect was in stable condition following the shooting , while Barron was said to be hospitalized in critical condition. A chef attacked when he tried to stop the suspect from stealing the knife from the restaurant where he worked was said to be in serious-but-stable condition , the newspaper said.
